Dentist & Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Ms Eileen Johnston is a Dentist & Cognitive Behavioural Therapist who has a special interest in Dental Anxiety, Trauma-Informed Care & Chronic Facial Pain.

With a warm and empathetic approach, Eileen combines her expertise in dentistry and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to support patients struggling with dental anxiety, psychological trauma-related concerns, and chronic facial pain.

Eileen qualified from Glasgow University Dental School in 2004 and completed her foundation training and MFDS in Edinburgh in 2006. More recently her passion for patient-centred care led her to further studies, achieving a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and a Master’s in Mental Health Practice from the University of the West of Scotland.

Dedicated to a holistic approach, Eileen has additional training in Hypnosis (Medical and Dental Hypnosis Society), Counselling Skills (COSCA), and Cognitive Behavioural Interventions (COSCA). She has also completed the Certificate in Evidence-Based Hypnosis from the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy in London.

Eileen specialises in trauma-informed dental care, recognising that past negative experiences - such as painful procedures, loss of control, or personal trauma - can make dental visits distressing. She integrates CBT and hypnosis to help patients manage dental anxiety, gag reflexes, fear of needles and psychological triggers associated with the dental environment as well as overcoming fear-driven avoidance of dental care.

Emotional stress and psychological trauma can manifest physically, often leading to chronic jaw pain, headaches, and facial tension. Stress and anxiety can also heighten the intensity of chronic facial pain, making it more challenging to manage. By integrating CBT and hypnosis, Eileen helps patients address both the psychological and physical impacts of stress, reducing muscle tension, subconscious clenching, and grinding. This holistic approach can also alleviate the amplified effects of anxiety and stress, offering relief from chronic facial pain and helping patients regain comfort and well-being.

By integrating CBT and hypnosis, Eileen provides a gentle and tailored approach to overcoming dental anxiety, TMJ disorders, and chronic facial pain. She works collaboratively with each patient, creating a safe, compassionate space where they can regain comfort, resilience, and confidence in their dental care experience and feel empowered to manage their anxiety or pain more effectively improving their overall quality of life.
